Why Choose MicroArid?

  • A living soil foundation: Designed to support natural decomposition and nutrient cycling as your bioactive system establishes.
  • Support for arid planting: A nutrient-rich foundation for suitable plants within your reptile habitat.
  • A home for your clean-up crew: Supports isopods and springtails when their moisture, shelter and feeding needs are met.
  • Ready to use: Add it directly from the bag or moisten it before setting up your enclosure.
  • Designed to mature with your habitat: Appropriate care supports the developing relationships between soil organisms, plants and your clean-up crew over time.

How to Use MicroArid

Pour MicroArid into your enclosure as supplied, or moisten it before adding your reptiles.

  • General starting minimum: We recommend at least 3 inches of substrate.
  • With isopods and a non-burrowing reptile: We strongly recommend 5–6 inches or more.
  • For burrowing reptiles: Choose a substrate depth appropriate to the species, size and digging needs of your animal.

Maintain access to sheltered, moist refuges for isopods and springtails while managing the wider habitat for your reptile's requirements.

Continue monitoring moisture, removing uneaten food and spot-cleaning as needed as your bioactive system develops.

Build Your Bioactive Setup

Choose an isopod suited to your enclosure, such as Giant Canyon isopods, Powder Orange or Powder Blue, and pair your chosen culture with springtails.

Add Cholla Wood and Magnolia Seed Pods for natural cover, texture and hiding spaces for smaller members of your clean-up crew.

Isopods, springtails and décor are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use MicroArid for bearded dragons and leopard geckos?

Yes. MicroArid is formulated for bearded dragons, leopard geckos and other arid or semi-arid reptiles. Its nutrient-rich living soil foundation supports suitable arid plants and clean-up crews. Maintain heating, lighting and enclosure conditions appropriate to your reptile's species. Isopods and springtails are purchased separately.

How deep should MicroArid be?

We recommend a general starting minimum of 3 inches. When keeping isopods with a non-burrowing reptile, we strongly recommend 5–6 inches or more. Burrowing reptiles may require greater depth based on their species, size and behavior.

Do I need to moisten MicroArid before adding it?

You can add MicroArid directly from the bag or moisten it before setting up your enclosure. Manage ongoing moisture according to your reptile, plants and clean-up crew. Isopods and springtails still need access to moist refuges within an arid habitat.

How much MicroArid do I need for my reptile enclosure?

For a rectangular enclosure, multiply the internal length × width × desired substrate depth in inches, then divide by 57.75 to estimate the volume in US quarts.

For example, a 48 × 24-inch enclosure needs approximately 60 quarts for a 3-inch substrate bed, before accounting for space occupied by décor.

Are isopods and springtails included?

No. MicroArid provides the living soil foundation. Isopods and springtails are sold separately so you can choose a clean-up crew appropriate to your enclosure. Plants and décor are also sold separately.
