Colorful Isopods With Classic Rollie-Pollie Behavior

If you want an isopod you can actually watch, Armadillidium are hard to beat. Many are surface-active and visually rewarding, spending more time visible than moisture-loving varieties that stay beneath the substrate. When startled, many curl into a ball, showing the classic pill-bug behavior that makes them so enjoyable in display colonies.

Their distinctive patterns, colors and steady activity make them especially rewarding for planted terrariums, isopod display tanks and keepers who enjoy observing a colony as it settles in.

Why Keep Armadillidium?

The varieties in this collection are generally beginner-friendly when given the right foundation. They appreciate low-to-moderate humidity and good airflow, but lower humidity does not mean dry conditions.

Keep the soil moist enough to support the colony, offer a consistently damp area and allow the rest of the enclosure to breathe. Leaf litter, bark and other cover provide security and a natural food base. Exact care can differ by species, so follow the instructions on each individual product page rather than treating every Armadillidium exactly the same.

Favorites in This Collection

Zebra and Yellow Zebra (Armadillidium maculatum) bring bold banding and high-contrast patterning. Magic Potion Japanese and American lines (Armadillidium vulgare) are longtime collector favorites, while Gestroi (Armadillidium gestroi) is loved for its yellow spotting and visible surface activity.

The Clown group, including Dubrovnik, Montenegro and Klugii Pudding (Armadillidium klugii), adds another distinctive look. Peach (Armadillidium nasatum) and Peraccae are approachable choices for a first display colony, with additional Spanish, Mediterranean and specialty varieties for keepers who want to explore further.

Display Colony, Planted Terrarium or Bioactive Setup?

We primarily recommend Armadillidium as visual, display-focused isopods. They can work beautifully in planted terrariums and suitable bioactive habitats, but we would not position this collection as a universal reptile clean-up crew.

Choose a clean-up crew based on the animal, enclosure conditions and biological load. In a planted setup, keep plenty of leaf litter available and add a small amount of balanced isopod food or Superfood. Consistent supplemental nutrition helps keep feeding pressure off live plants while giving the colony another appropriate food source.

Build the Right Foundation

With more than 17 years of hands-on bioactive and living-soil experience, we focus on the details that make colonies easier to keep: appropriate substrate, leaf litter, cover, a moisture gradient, airflow and time to establish.
