Build Your First Ecosystem

Starting bioactive can feel overwhelming.

There are dozens of opinions online, endless supply lists, and a lot of pressure to build the “perfect” setup.

You do not need the biggest budget to build something healthy.

If we were helping someone build their very first bioactive enclosure today, this is exactly where we would start, and what we’ve recommended since 2020 both online and at conventions.

Our goal is simple: remove the guesswork and help you build a strong foundation first.

Reptile-specific recommendations are coming soon, but this setup works well for most beginner bioactive builds.

Start simple. Let the ecosystem do the work.

What We Would Buy First

1. Living Bioactive Soil

Your soil is your foundation.

This is not the place to cut corners. Your soil becomes the foundation for everything else. Healthy soil should behave more like an old-growth forest floor than dirt in a bag. *Remember, if it sits in a sealed bag on a shelf for months at a time, that soil is not Bioactive.

For most bioactive setups, we recommend starting with Microforest Lite.

Recommended depth:
• 3–4" for most setups
• 6"+ if your enclosure allows

Start with healthy soil and build upward.
→ Shop Microforest Lite

2. Build Your Forest Floor

Next, create layers.

This gives your soil system food sources, hiding areas and structure.

3. Add Your Clean Up Crew

Pair one beginner Isopod with Springtails. That's it!

Our favorites:

✓ Powder Isopods
✓ Dwarf White
✓ Oreo Crumble
✓ Red Koi
✓ Orange Cream

PLUS

✓ White Springtails

Start simple.

Your cleanup crew should work for you, not create extra work.

→ Shop Springtails

4. Support the Ecosystem

This step is highly recommended.

Your isopods naturally feed throughout the enclosure, but supplementation supports healthier populations and encourages stronger breeding.

Our recommendation:

✓ Superfood

Typical feeding:
• Small pinch every 3–4 days
• Every ~48 hours if encouraging breeding

Feeding supplemental food will not stop your cleanup crew from cleaning.

If it is in the enclosure, they will find it!
