Choose a Bioactive Clean-Up Crew That Fits Your Habitat

Choose your bioactive clean-up crew around the conditions inside the enclosure. Moisture range, available hiding areas and the animals living in the habitat all influence which organisms are most likely to establish and perform well.

Springtails and isopods fill different roles within the same living system. Springtails help consume fungi, biofilm, naturally occurring mold and microscopic organic material. Isopods process larger materials such as leaf litter, decaying wood, shed skin, leftover food and animal waste.

For most bioactive enclosures with animals, we recommend adding both. In a heavily planted terrarium without reptiles or other animals, springtails alone may provide enough biological support.

Read Springtails vs. Isopods to compare their roles and decide whether your setup needs one or both.

Match Your Isopods to the Enclosure

Moist and Tropical Habitats

Dwarf White (Trichorhina tomentosa), Dwarf Purple (Trichoniscus sp.) and Little Sea (Cubaris murina) isopods are useful options for habitats with dependable moisture. Dwarf varieties spend much of their time within the substrate, making them a practical choice when you want a productive clean-up crew that stays mostly out of sight.

Moderate and Adaptable Habitats

Powder isopods (Porcellionides pruinosus), including Powder Orange, Powder Blue, White Out, Oreo Crumbles, Orange Cream and Red Koi, reproduce readily and tolerate a useful range of bioactive conditions. Their speed and surface activity also make them easier to observe than many substrate-dwelling dwarf species.

Drier and Semi-Arid Habitats

Giant Canyon (Porcellio dilatatus), Peraccae (Armadillidium peraccae) and Sandstone (Armadillidium scaberrimum) are better starting points for habitats with lower overall humidity. Drier-tolerant species still require access to a protected moist area within the enclosure.

Larger Clean-Up Crew and Feeder Options

Dairy Cow and Orange Dairy Cow isopods (Porcellio laevis) can serve as both clean-up crew members and productive feeder cultures. They are larger, highly prolific and especially protein-hungry.

Because of that behavior, they may not be the best match for enclosures containing eggs, very small animals, molting invertebrates or other delicate inhabitants. If you are unsure, ask us before choosing them for a shared enclosure.

Give Your Clean-Up Crew the Right Foundation

A clean-up crew supports biological recycling while regular observation, moisture management and spot cleaning remain part of responsible enclosure care.

Isopods and springtails also need a supportive environment of their own. Living bioactive soil, leaf litter, protected hiding areas and appropriate nutrition help cultures establish and continue functioning over time.

Experience Behind Every Recommendation

Our clean-up crew guidance is informed by more than 17 years of hands-on experience building organic soil systems from the ground up. The cultures offered through RDI are selected and maintained using the same living-soil approach we use throughout our own bioactive systems.

Shop the available cultures above and choose according to habitat moisture, behavior and the needs of the enclosure. If you are uncertain, contact us. We are always happy to help you narrow the choices before you order!
