Build Your First Bioactive Terrarium

Starting your first bioactive setup can feel overwhelming, but it does not need to be complicated! This collection brings together the core products you need to build a healthy biological foundation: starter kits, living soil, leaf litter, springtails, isopods and natural habitat supplies.

Our approach is built from more than 17 years of hands-on experience with living soil and bioactive ecosystems. We focus on practical products that serve a purpose, so you can start simply without buying every possible add-on at once.

Start With the Foundation

Choose a starter kit if you want the simplest path. If you prefer to build your enclosure piece by piece, begin with MicroForest Lite living soil as your foundation.

Next, add leaf litter and natural structure such as mossy bark or cork. These materials provide food, cover, texture and support for the biological activity developing beneath the surface.

Add Your Clean-Up Crew

For most reptile and amphibian bioactive enclosures, we recommend pairing springtails with a beginner-friendly isopod culture. Springtails help process microscopic fungi, mold and biofilm, while isopods work through larger pieces of leaf litter, wood and organic matter.

Springtails may also be used by themselves in planted terrariums and vivariums that do not house reptiles, amphibians or isopods. Learn more about how springtails and isopods work together.

Support the Developing Ecosystem

Maintain appropriate moisture and airflow for your enclosure, keeping the substrate damp where needed but never waterlogged. Add supplemental food as the clean-up crew becomes established, and observe how your enclosure changes over time.

There is no single perfect setup. Different animals and habitats have different needs, so review each individual product page for specific moisture and care guidance.
