Description

Your Bioactive Enclosure Should Improve Over Time

Support the living soil in your habitat with Soil Shrooms, RDI’s 3D-printed mushrooms designed for gradual, long-term mycelium support in tropical, arid and semi-arid bioactive enclosures.

Made from a gypsum-containing material that gradually dissolves with moisture, each shroom also offers supplemental food for isopods and springtails.

We have tested Soil Shrooms in our own planted reptile enclosures, where we have observed isopods and springtails grazing on the surface. Partially bury the stem and let your shroom become part of your bioactive setup.

Sold individually. Shipping included.

Why Choose Soil Shrooms?

  • Supplemental food for your clean-up crew: Edible for springtails and isopods, Soil Shrooms offer an additional food source alongside appropriate leaf litter and their usual foods.
  • Gradual support with minimal upkeep: Place your shroom in the substrate and continue your enclosure’s normal care routine.
  • Designed and tested by RDI: Development began in Spring 2025, with work on the concept testing in early 2026.
  • Easy to place: Partially bury the stem to keep the shroom upright and adjust its height beneath your enclosure lid.
  • Suitable for different habitat styles: Use in tropical, arid or semi-arid bioactive setups while maintaining the conditions your animals require.

We have been developing the Soil Shrooms design and its use in bioactive habitats since summer 2025. We are proud to introduce an original RDI product shaped around practical placement and gradual use in living soil, continuing to improve your bioactive habitat over time.

How to Use Soil Shrooms

  1. Choose your spot. Place the shroom where it can stand securely in the substrate and fit beneath the enclosure lid.
  2. Plant the stem. Partially bury it, leaving the cap visible above the soil. You can place it directly from the pouch.
  3. Presoak if you prefer. To hydrate your shroom before placement, soak it in water for up to 30 minutes. Presoaking is optional.
  4. Follow your normal care routine. Moisture encourages faster change. In an arid setup, maintain the humidity and watering appropriate for your animals.

Our starting guide is one Soil Shroom for a 6 - 18-quart bin. For enclosures up to 20 gallons, you may choose two for placement in different areas. Additional pieces are optional.

Use Soil Shrooms alongside appropriate soil, leaf litter and your clean-up crew’s usual foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Soil Shrooms?

SSoil Shrooms are RDI-designed, 3D-printed mushrooms intended for gradual mycelium support in bioactive soil. They contain gypsum and gradually dissolve with moisture. Edible for isopods and springtails, they also provide supplemental food alongside your clean-up crew’s usual diet. Reptile and Terrarium Safe!

Can I use Soil Shrooms in tropical and arid enclosures?

Yes! Soil Shrooms are intended for tropical, arid and semi-arid bioactive setups. Moisture influences how quickly the material changes, so a drier habitat may retain the shroom’s shape longer. Continue maintaining the humidity and watering routine appropriate for your animals.

How many Soil Shrooms should I use?

Our starting guide is one Soil Shroom for a 6–18-quart bin. For enclosures up to 20 gallons, you may choose two in different locations. Extra pieces are optional. Continue providing appropriate soil, leaf litter and your clean-up crew’s usual foods.

Do I need to soak Soil Shrooms before use?

No. You can partially bury the stem directly from the pouch, leaving the cap above the soil. If you prefer to hydrate your shroom first, soak it in water for up to 30 minutes before placement. Adjust the planting depth so your enclosure lid closes comfortably.

How long do Soil Shrooms last?

Based on our testing, RDI estimates 10–12 months in tropical enclosures, with 12–18 months or longer possible in arid or semi-arid setups. These timeframes are both conservative minimums. Moisture and enclosure conditions affect how quickly each shroom diminishes.
