Why leaf litter matters
Leaf litter is a working layer in a bioactive habitat. It provides natural cover, supports a moisture gradient and adds forest-floor structure beneath plants, hides and other enclosure décor.
For isopods, leaf litter is also a food layer. Isopods rely on leaf litter, microbial life and bark, so keeping a visible layer available helps support the colony as the enclosure develops. As the leaves break down, they become part of the habitat’s natural soil-food-web.
Ethically sourced and collected
Every variety is ethically sourced and collected, pesticide-free, insecticide-free and reptile, isopod and springtail-safe!
We select and prepare each variety to give your enclosure natural texture, useful cover and materials that can participate in the living system rather than simply sitting on the surface.
Choose your leaf litter
Pin Oak features medium-to-large whole leaves that break down easily. It is a dependable everyday choice for adding cover, texture and ongoing food to the enclosure.
Magnolia has large, thicker leaves that break down more slowly. It provides longer-lasting cover and can also add a beautiful decorative layer to the forest floor.
Maple is dried and already beginning to decay, making it a useful way to give your enclosure an instant leaf boost.
Mixed Leaf Litter includes two to three leaf types based on availability. It adds variety, texture and visual diversity to the habitat.
Kudzu is dried leaf litter and a favorite choice for natural cover and forest-floor texture.
White Oak offers medium-to-large whole leaves that create natural cover and structure throughout the enclosure.
Add leaf litter across the surface and replenish it as it is consumed so a visible layer remains available. For a complete setup, pair your leaf litter with bioactive soil substrates and springtails for a complete clean-up crew.
