One of the biggest complaints when building a brand new Bioactive Living Soil Isopod substrate is the fact that fungus gnats are almost guaranteed to appear.

Even seasoned Isopod breeders are sure to come across these at some point or another - they are almost inevitable. 

Suppose you choose NOT to be proactive in your Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols; the perfect temperature and humidity levels for Isopods are also the ideal breeding ground for the "Nuisance" pests. 

Our good friend Mark, founder of MI Beneficials, created a unique, hand-made product in Michigan that provides effective pest control solutions against fungus gnats, soil stages of thrips, and root aphids.

The (Dalotia coriaria) Rove Beetle and Hypoapsis mile are a tag team on thrips, fungus gnats, root aphids, and even some pest soil mites.

While the rove beetle is 1-3mm in size, visible and black, the Hypoapsis miles are less than 1mm in size and color from white to brown. 

The rove beetle can take a little longer to establish and make a dent in your fungus gnat issues, but the Hypoapsis mile immediately starts eating fungus gnat larvae, which is why they are great when applied together!

Fish Flakes: Especially within new Vivarium or Terrarium setups, using fish flakes as an Isopod food source attracts unwanted vector pests and disease issues. 

In a more recent Bio-Active substrate setup, adding fish flakes allows mold to take hold within 24 hours, bringing fungus gnat flies and Detritivorous mites (Non-Beneficial Mites) to your Isopod substrate.
